TERs are regional trains but there are also regional buses, hence the term “Regional Express Transport”. The TER allows you to go to cities in France that are not served by TGVs. TER ticket prices are much cheaper than those of the TGV Inoui or even Ouigo.

The TERs were launched in 1995 to develop the territories. They are managed independently by each region, in collaboration with SNCF, or since the end of the monopoly, by another railway company.

How and where to buy my TER ticket?

On the Internet

You can buy your TER e-tickets directly on Kombo . If necessary, you can directly book a TER combined with another mode of transport (bus or other train company). Another possibility: the regional TER site (each region has its own site to manage TER ticket reservations).

At the train station

If you need very specific advice, go directly to the station where SNCF advisors will be able to guide you. Be careful, there is often a queue and you will NOT be able to cancel online.

When can I buy my TER ticket?

Tickets are cheapest when sales open. TER tickets are generally available between 3 and 5 months before the departure date, depending on the region.

How much does a TER ticket cost?

Everything will depend on the distance and the TER timetable, but, most of the time, the TER will cost you much less than a TGV. During school holidays or for events, regions can organize special rates: -40% during school holidays for adults and free for under-12s for example. Remember to look at the TER offers that we offer on our site!

Can I get a TER ticket refunded?

Most TER tickets are cancellable and refundable. The precise conditions are displayed at the time of purchase and depend on the region.

If you purchased on Kombo, you can cancel your TER ticket in 2 clicks in your after-sales area. You are reimbursed directly to your means of payment (credit card, Apple Pay, Paypal, etc.) and your account will be recredited in 5 days maximum.

What are the SNCF TER timetables?

As the TERs are organized by the regions, the timetables depend on the policy of each region. There may be several TERs per day depending on the lines. To find out the TER timetables, do a search on Kombo.

Which subscription to pay less for your TER?

There are many different TER subscriptions for unlimited travel. It all depends on the regions, your age, and your needs: daily or weekly TER trips for example. Also note that there may be discount cards for young and old.

Useful information for traveling by TER

Find useful information to make your travels easier and the essential rules for traveling well by TER.

Can we eat in a TER?

No, it is not possible to buy (neither drinks nor food) on TER trains. The SNCF does not provide a catering service, unlike Intercités or TGV trains. Consider doing some shopping before taking your TER.

Can you travel with your bike on the TER?

Yes. In each TER, there is a dedicated space for bicycles. You do not have to make a reservation in advance of your trip (which is different for other SNCF trains). The only recommendation we have to make is to arrive early to be sure of finding a place for your bike in your TER.

Are there toilets in the TER?

Yes, all SNCF TER trains are equipped with toilets in each TER car.

Can you travel with your pet (dog, cat) in a TER?

Yes ! The SNCF allows you to travel with your favorite animal, on all trains (TER, TGV, Intercités, etc.) except the Eurostar. To be able to stay on board with your animal, you must ask permission from other travelers, have all the documents that allow the animal to be identified and ensure that all health rules (electronic chips, vaccines, etc.) and well-being of your animal are well respected.

Also note that you must book a TER ticket for your animal in advance:

  • If your animal weighs less than 6kg: it must therefore travel in a suitable bag (45 cm x 30 cm x 25 cm maximum) at your feet or on your lap. The ticket costs 7€.

  • If your animal weighs more than 6kg: to be able to travel in a TER with a large dog, it must be muzzled and travel at your feet. Regarding its ticket, the price corresponds to 50% of a full price ticket for a 2nd class ticket. The price may therefore vary depending on the TER line you use.

  • If your dog is a guide dog for the blind in particular, it is not necessary to purchase a TER ticket before your departure. On the other hand, your dog must remain at your feet.

What should I do if my TER is canceled following an SNCF strike?

For SNCF strikes, some carriers provide specific after-sales and refund policies . This is the case for so-called “Sec” TER tickets (i.e. non-connecting TER tickets). Indeed during a TER strike , the SNCF makes the transport plan available the day before at 5 p.m., and you then have the possibility of canceling your ticket until 00 a.m. It is therefore essential to remember to cancel your ticket the day before at midnight if you wish to be reimbursed, because beyond this deadline, unfortunately no reimbursement will be possible according to SNCF TER rules.
